What are the main causes of high mobile data usage and charges?
High mobile data bills are usually due to either:
- A data plan that doesn't match your current data usage levels
- The absence of a Mobile Broadband Data Pack on your mobile phone or broadband service
Mobile Broadband Data Packs provide a set amount of data allocated to your eligible mobile service each month for a low monthly fee. Data packs should be added to your mobile phone or broadband service if you plan to use data - including the mobile internet and email.By not having a Mobile Broadband Data Pack, you will be charged Pay as You Go rates for mobile data usage, and this can quickly add up if your data usage levels are high.
If your mobile service already has a Data Pack, it's possible that it may not match your current business usage levels. The correct data usage plan to suit your needs will depend on how much data you use and how often you use it.
Tools to help manage your data bills
SMS Alerts
SMS Usage Alerts are available free of charge to all customers who subscribe to the new Mobile Broadband Data Packs.
Once your SMS Usage Alert is turned on:
- You will receive an alert once you reach 80%* of the usage outlined in your Mobile Broadband Data Pack.
- You will then receive another alert once 100%* of your data usage is reached.
Simply change your default setting to 'on' to activate the service.
* There may be a delay of up to 6 hours from when usage reaches 80% or 100% and you receiving the alert
My Data Usage
The My Data Usage service allows you to view your data and MMS charges before receiving your Telstra bill. These charges are approximate only, and don't take into account discounts available to customers, such as data allowances in Telstra Mobile Phone Plans and account level discounts.
There are three different ways to access My Data Usage
- For Next G™ handsets, go to My Account via the My Place menu or via the BigPond Mobile Services/Telstra Business WAP Portal, where the service is known as Data Usage Snapshot. Note: Standard BigPond Mobile Services (WAP) charges apply.
- Visit https://es.telstra.com/MyDataUsage/ , using your telstra.com account. Once here, enter in your login details and press OK. To create a telstra.com account, follow the easy steps outlined on the site.
- SMS the word 'use' to 176. You will receive a response containing the date of your data session, volume in kilobytes and approximate charge (if applicable). To request more information, send another SMS with the letter 'm'.
Note: Standard SMS charges apply when sending SMS. Return SMS messages are not charged (with exception of Usage Notices)
Note: SMS can only provide the unbilled data sessions for the handset used to send the inquiry.
